History of Palace on Wheels
The present Rajasthan was once an archipelago of numerous
princely states. The history of present Palace of Wheels dates back to the time
when every region of Rajasthan was celebrated under the separate rules of
Rajput kings. After independence when all Rajput states were joined together to
form undivided Rajputana or present Rajasthan, the personal luxurious coaches
and trains left abandoned.
In 1981-82, Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and
Indian Railways decided to launch a special luxury train joining the highly
decorated coaches to offer the tourists a luxurious journey through Rajasthan.
26th January 1982 was the first day when the steam run Palace on Wheels first
made its journey through the heritage land of Rajasthan.
