Famous National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand a beautiful state located in northern parts of India, comprises of 13 districts spread over a vast geographical area. The state is best known for its mesmerizing natural beauty. In January 2007 name Uttarakhand was changed from Uttaranchal to Uttarakhand. This state earlier known as Devbhumi, i.e. adobe of Gods. Rich flora and fauna is commendable in Uttarakhand, well known among tourists for its Wildlife Sanctuaries. The Natural fragrance of nature in Uttarakhand involves a sweet smell of few animals. The most famous wildlife projects like save The White Tiger and Red Panda are started at Uttarakhand only. The state Govt. usually comes up with the plans to improve wildlife. A lot of tourist participation is seen in Uttarakhand because of its rich wildlife. Wild plant and animal species are mostly found in this state. Higher up in the Himalayas one can find the rare species of White Leopard and many other animals. The most famous wildlife sanctuaries and National parks in Uttarakhand are Corbett National Park, Mussoorie Wildlife Sanctuary, Valley of Flowers National Park, Askot Sanctuary, Binsar Sanctuary, Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, Rajaji National Park, Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve and Kedarnath Sanctuary.

The oldest national park of India is situated in the foothills of Himalayas and is well connected with roads. You can take an elephant safari at Corbett Park. Jim Park also offers numerous adventurous activities like fishing, rock climbing, river crossing, rafting. It is the biggest national park of India with accommodation facility which attracts over 70,000 tourists every year.

The first wildlife reserve of India, extending over an area of more than 500 sq km in the Himalayan foothills, Corbett National Park is one place a traveller in love with nature should not miss. Known as the place where Project Tiger, meant to conserve the wild beast initiated the park had assumed much significance.

The park which is located in Uttarakhand is 260 km from the capital of the country, New Delhi and 76 km from Nainital, a nearby hill station. While Delhi will be the nearest railway and airport destination, one could easily reach the place on road.

Rajaji National Park is located at Ramgarh in Uttarakhand state. One can go there while travelling to Dehradun and Haridwar. Rajaji National Park has been named after C. Rajagopalachari a famous Freedom fighter. The wildlife of Rajaji National Park has 23 species of mammals like jungle cat, ancient elephant, leopard, tiger and deer. The scenic beauty of Rajaji National Park attracts the visitors across India and broad. One can find dense trees of Sal, Riverine and Scrub etc. in the forest. It is believed that this place is first home to migratory birds that enter into Indian sub continental. Deer and Goral can be easily seen by the visitors as they roam around the grasslands. Many rare species of birds are found in the Rajaji National Park including Red Jungle Fowl. There are Tourist rest Houses in Rajaji National Park where tourist enjoy their stay gazing at the beauty of the Park.

Nanda Devi National Park is situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Nanda Devi Park lies just next to Nanda Devi Peak. The park was established in 1980. The National Park covers approximately 630 sq km of geographical area. There are no roads available for reaching the park. The only way to reach this park is to take a drive from Joshimath and later by trekking up. The best time suggested to travelers is from April to October. There are amazing peaks surrounding this National Park. The area of Nanda Devi Park attracts people who love mountaineering. Near around 80 animal species have been found in this sanctuary. The animals which one can easily locate at Nanda Devi National Park are Bharal, Brown Bear, Common Langur, Goral, Himalayan Musk Deer and Black Bear. One can also visit Badrinath & Hemkund sahib. There are no accommodation facilities available for tourists in the park. The closest spot where one can make their stay is at Joshimath.

In Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand there is a national park named as Govind National Park. This park is also known as Govind Pashu Vihar. It was established in 1955. The best time to visit this sanctuary is from the month of May to October. Govind National Park has rich medicinal plants. The Govind wildlife sanctuary provides shelter to endangered Snow Leopard. The huge geographical area of Govind National Park results in a beautiful place providing shelter to homeless animals. It is estimated that Govind National Park has 15 species of mammals and 150 species of birds. One can find Himalayan Snow Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Musk Dear, Bharal, Serow and Leopard. The species of birds at Govind National Park are Bearded Vulture, Owls, Pigeons, Bulbul, Cuckoo and Golden Eagle etc. Apart from the National Park visitors can also have a glance of snow clad peaks and glaciers.

Dudhwa National Park is situated in the Terai region of Uttar Pradesh. Established in 1958, with an area of 680 km2, it is home to various Flora, Fauna and wildlife. The vegetation of Dudhwa National Park is marshy and consists of trees like Shorea Robusta, Terminalis Tomentosa, Eugenia Jambolana, Tierminalia Beleriaca, Bombax Malabaricum and Dalbergia Sissoo. Dudhwa National Park is famous for its fine Sal trees. The park is home to some rare species like Hispid Hare and Barasingha. Other animals seen here are the Barking Deer, Swamp Deer, Tiger, Rhinoceros, Jackal, Jungle cat and Sloth Bear. The marshes of Dudhwa National Park are inhabited by 400 species of resident and migratory birds like Swamp Francolin, Sarus Crane, Painted Stork and various species of woodpeckers. Other birds include Drongos, Barbets, Cormorants, Ducks, Geese, Hornbills, Bulbuls, Teal and Kingfishers.
